You know what can make you think about sleep?
When you’re totally sleepy but aren’t allowed to sleep!
I wrote this poem in the lunch room of a hospital I worked in.
The bad part was that I was on night shift and was having the hardest time staying awake!
Thank goodness a beeper was attached to me and sounded off loudly whenever I was needed. Otherwise, I probably would have fallen asleep on the job. π
Sweet Slumber
What dreaded thing you are
that comes when not needed
and arrives when not wanted!
How dare you come to me now
when itβs your opposite I asked for
and your other that I longed for?
Where were you when I did call you out
I yelled without shame
and whispered your name?
Why do you still come to me
and make me feel weary
and quite frankly a bit dreary?
Fine, I give up! I succumb to your calling!
Lay down now my tired head
and my tired body on your soft bed!
I now accept you wholeheartedly
for I can resist you no longer!
So come to me fast, oh sweet slumber!
Can so relate to this one right now since I am having such trouble sleeping at night. I fall asleep, but only for about an hour or 2, and then BAM, wide awake and can’t fall back asleep until it’s almost morning. It’s awful. I mean….shouldn’t I be dead tired?

…aww… insomniac people like me don’t feel this way… but i liked your sentiments here… sometimes what we ask for are not the one we get…. a reminder that we live in an up-side-down world…. smiles…

Ha, this made me laugh. Sometimes I cannot sleep when I need to, but then I have visions of sleep at less than opportune times. It would be nice if we didn’t have to attend to the clock, wouldn’t it? If we could just wake and sleep whenever our body signalled!!

I agree! I wonder how it was before the invention of the clock? I suppose it was the animals and the sun that people relied on to wake up and sleep at the right times. π
