There was a song
only we could hear
would call to us
in whispers
and wind
And we’d float
on riversong
heart beating
loud
and
soft
But we fell
and we lost
pushed down
by the
waterfall
And bits and pieces
not enough whole
to stay afloat
on our
dream
The water
carried you away
and the dream
is all
I have
today.
It used to be so gratifying
to hear that ding
I always had the volume up
so I wouldn’t miss a thing
“Ding! You’ve got mail!”
I felt so important
that someone sent me an email
I’d rush to my computer
like it was the Holy Grail
“Ding! You’ve got mail!”
After school it was
the first thing I’d go see
The sound of the modem connecting
was happy music to me

Now there’s only a sound
and it happens every minute
I’ve learned to wait a while
and choose to ignore it

I’m not that important
just a bunch of junk mail
I miss the days when people
used to use Postal Mail
meatless meatballs
unscented rose
waterless fish
nonsense prose
sunless moon
wingless bird
timeless clock
wheyless curd
rootless tree
voiceless singer
you-less me
happy-less forever
I’m not perfect but
I’ve learned to accept me
And within my four walls
I’m quite happy
But outside the door
I’m a caricature
And the world laughs
To my displeasure
No thank you, sir
I’ll stay inside
Live in happiness
Forever hide.
